Cynthia Erivo plays the abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery and then helped others do the same, in this biopic. (Erivo also sang an Oscar-nominated song in the end credits). After escaping a plantation in Maryland, Tubman returned to shepherd her family, and many others, to freedom. The Fourth of July celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence—and Harriet is a reminder that not all Americans were free at the time.
