A brutal war of words broke out on Twitter between model and TV host Chrissy Teigen and Daily Mail journalist and TV host Piers Morgan.

The spat began when Chrissy's husband, singer John Legend, suggested Piers quit his public roles.

John hit out after Piers made remarks about Muhammad Ali being more racist than Donald Trump.

Defending his comments, Piers wrote: "I hope people don't make me sound too perfect when I die.

"No coats of sugar please."

".@piersmorgan you could test us by announcing your retirement," John tweeted., external

That all-important full stop ensured this was seen by John's 7.85 million followers.

"From what? trolling isn't a job (I've tried)," Chrissy wrote in reply to her husband., external

Piers hit back, taking aim at Chrissy's career.

"Maybe I should take up a proper job, like modelling," he wrote., external

She was having none of it.

"It keeps me nice and not-racist so sure, give it a go," she responded.

After stating that he is not a racist, Piers encouraged Chrissy to read his recent Daily Mail column, titled Ali WAS a racist who repented, Trump ISN'T a racist.

Chrissy then tweeted: "Sorry can't read, just a modell (sic) doing modelling," she said.

Piers followed up by correcting her spelling of model.

"I can't tweet him anymore," she wrote. "He has fans somehow and they...they aren't quite "all there", as they say."

Chrissy then traded tweets with another Twitter user who claimed she was only famous for marrying John Legend, before turning her attention back to Piers once more.

"My newborn just looked up at me and said "mommy, why is piers morgan so unequivocally douchy?" she tweeted.

"I didn't know what to say."

Piers Morgan chose not to reply, instead retweeting her update.

"My 4 kids all just looked at me and said: 'Daddy, who's Chrissy Teigen?'" he commented.

Chrissy posted two more tweets about Piers, neither of which included his Twitter handle.

"Piers Morgan searches his name every 4.8 seconds," she wrote.

"Hi, Piers. I know you're reading this. You unequivocal douche."

He denied having seen the second tweet as he retweeted it, firing one final shot.

"Hi Chrissy. No I'm not, you ludicrous swimwear accessory."

The clash was prompted by a Tweet from Piers Morgan on Sunday 5 June 2016, when he first discussed what he described as Muhammad Ali's racist views in his early career.

"Muhammad Ali said far more inflammatory/racist things about white people than Donald Trump ever has about Muslims," he wrote.
