A Lot Like Adiós: A Novel (Primas of Power Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 746 ratings

"Alexis Daria's A Lot Like Adiós is a charming, sexy spitfire of a novel! Romance readers, this is your new favorite book!" --Emily Henry, #1 New York Times bestselling author of People We Meet on Vacation

The national bestselling author of You Had Me at Hola returns with a seductive second-chance romance about a commitment-phobic Latina and her childhood best friend who has finally returned home.

Hi Mich. It’s Gabe.

After burning out in her corporate marketing career, Michelle Amato has built a thriving freelance business as a graphic designer. So what if her love life is nonexistent? She’s perfectly fine being the black sheep of her marriage-obsessed Puerto Rican-Italian family. Besides, the only guy who ever made her want happily-ever-after disappeared thirteen years ago.

It’s been a long time.

Gabriel Aguilar left the Bronx at eighteen to escape his parents’ demanding expectations, but it also meant saying goodbye to Michelle, his best friend and longtime crush. Now, he’s the successful co-owner of LA’s hottest celebrity gym, with an investor who insists on opening a New York City location. It’s the last place Gabe wants to go, but when Michelle is unexpectedly brought on board to spearhead the new marketing campaign, everything Gabe’s been running from catches up with him.

I’ve missed you.

Michelle is torn between holding Gabe at arm’s length or picking up right where they left off—in her bed. As they work on the campaign, old feelings resurface, and their reunion takes a sexy turn. Facing mounting pressure from their families—who think they’re dating—and growing uncertainty about their futures, can they resolve their past mistakes, or is it only a matter of time before Gabe says adiós again?

Works hard to be modern, but also very sexy
I really enjoyed this second entry in the Primas of Power series. We get to delve deeper into the secretive and fiery Michelle's life. This is a second chance romance, with little friends to lovers thrown in there. Once again, dual third-person POV from her and her best friend now partner/lover Gabriel or Gabe.As a marketer, I really identified with Michelle's feeling of enjoying a larger project and the attendant research. I can't identify the large family or being bilingual, but it was very entertaining either way.Gabe had a lot of family issues to deal with, along with unresolved feelings from leaving Michelle in the lurch as teenagers. These two have AMAZING chemistry. Unusual for a romance novel, they get down and dirty right away. But feelings are a longer time coming--or at least the communication of them.I stayed at 4 stars because I just felt Gabe was more stubborn and short-sighted than usual. He DID have a unique and creative method for the big gesture, so my nerdy self appreciated that. Also, I was really annoyed at the language in the teenage chat sessions. A cute convention, but no Spanish, no slang and barely any emoji. VERY unrealistic for nerdy New Yorkers. There are plenty of creative steamy scenes, progressive body, and sex-positive conversations. Also, if you read the first book, you know there's Spanish coming. Now, who's ready to see who sweet and quiet Ava ends up with?

WOO-HOO!!! Was the steam coming out strong with this book!!! This is my 2nd Alexis Daria book and I swear, this book in the "Primas in Power" series is just as good and hot, steamy and to die for as the 1st one.

This second chance romance involves Michelle and Gabe. Childhood best friends for years until one night, they almost took their relationship to the next level. That turned out to be a disaster with Gabe leaving town. 13 years later, here we are.

Gabe owns a successful gym in LA but needs to go back to the East Coast to open a new location. New location means new marketing for the area, which means.......new hires.

The sexual tension of unfinished business when Gabe and Michell first see each other is so hot that I even felt it here in Houston from New York. 😂😂

Having to work together brings up so many childhood memories between the two of them. One aspect of their past relationship that I loved was how they created fan fiction together of one of their favorite shows. Reminiscing on that was so cute. It was awesomely hilarious, sweet and wonderful.

But their first hookup, though??!??!? OMG, OMG, OMG!! That was sooo HOTTT!!! Like, OMG! I absolutely love these two! Their relationship and chemistry came to feel so natural once they let go of the past, so the swooniness just leapt off the page and I couldn't get enough.

I loved the overall setting, the family and the history this book gave me. Alexis Daria has quickly become an auto-buy authore for me and I cannot wait for Book 3 of the Primas!!

A childhood friends to lovers romance where Michelle and Gabe haven’t seen each other in thirteen years. They ended their friendship with a huge argument and a hot make out session. I was so looking forward to them seeing each other again and the tension between them. Sadly it just wasn’t there. A car ride and one night where not many words were exchanged. That was all it took for them to resolve it. I had at least expected some pining. Instead I got a story of two friends who find their way back to one another. Friends with benefits. The chemistry between them was great but I expected more romance.  I appreciated that I got to know more about their cultures and how Michelle and Gabe finally expressed their feelings towards the end were sweet suited the story so well. Overall a great story but I’m feeling a little disappoined.

What I didn't love about this book, it was long, and parts of it felt like it, and I wish there was more groveling on Gabe's part. What I did love about this book, literally everything else! This book was a steamy childhood (and ex) friends to lovers, sweet and swoony delight. I love Gabe and Michelle so much. I loved the glimpses of their past, and how much they always loved each other. I love the fan fic part of this book and how it tied in what they were goin through present day. I feel like both Gabe and Michelle were relatable. Michelle was the side character that interested me most in You Had Me At Hola, because she seemed like she was a no nonsense, take no crap woman, but I really enjoyed seeing her softer side in this book. Gabe is 100% a man that I would be attracted to if he was a real person. I love both of their families, and that they grew up next to each other. This book is STEAMY and I was not mad about it. I was shocked that the action started to quickly into the book and again I'm not mad about it. This book has so many things that I love about romance and I am very much looking forward to Ava's book.

I adore the Primas of Power and Alexis Daria's writing, so it's no surprise that A Lot Like Adiós was a quick, fun read for me.

Gabe and Michelle grew up right next to each other and were best friends until Gabe abruptly left for college on the other side of the country and cut all communications. Now he has to open a NYC location for his successful LA gym and Michelle is the best marketing pro in the NYC biz... and Gabe's partner has hired her. When Gabe realizes what's happened, he calls Michelle for the first time in 9 years and she demands that as part of her agreeing, he has to stay with her while he's in town. And of course they mend their relationship and explore the romantic and sexual feelings they'd been repressing all those years ago.

Second-chance romance isn't a favorite trope of mine, as I often struggle to hand-wave away the conflicts that were big enough to keep two people apart for years. This worked for me because Michelle was honest with herself most of the time. She knew she was mad at him and didn't pretend otherwise. Plus the "let's get it out of our system" banging was early and often, always an amusing premise for a romance reader. (It never works and the love interests always think it will. They make plans, we laugh.)

The only thing I had a hard time with was Gabe's relationship with his controlling parents. He left without telling anyone and then cut off his parents a couple years later at a family wedding, all because his parents were controlling and none of them were able to communicate in a healthy way. I don't have the ability to judge how this would read to others, but I'm estranged from one side of my family for a similar reason and the reconciliation in this book didn't work for me at all. It was too fast and felt to me like his father had suddenly changed and the ongoing estrangement was Gabe's fault for not staying in touch. Like I said, I'm too close to this.

Back to to the good stuff!

I bought A Lot Like Adiós in paperback but ended up reading it on audio, as is so often the case these days. The audio was well done and I zipped through in two afternoons.

Both main characters are bi, hurrah!

Mich and Gabe have lots of sex, but as usual Daria uses her sex scenes to look at some common--but not common in romance novels--aspects of sexual intimacy. For example, Mich doesn't usually bother trying to orgasm with a partner, while Gabe is into foreplay. So she's trying to get it over with but Gabe is trying to savor the experience. And *shocked face* they actually talk about it! Feeling like your pleasure is too much work or takes too long is a pretty common experience for women and I'm glad that Daria didn't treat it like Mich was just "repressed" or something. If you read You Had Me at Hola and appreciated the use of lube, you'll like this book for similar reasons.

Overall, this was a really solid read and I'm looking forward to the third (and last *cry*) prima's book!

Entertaining and raunchy, but did not hold my attention as well as the previous books. Felt a bit rushed at times.
