About the author

Victoria Banuelos designs and executes content marketing strategies for culturally diverse brands. She draws on a decade of experience in communication management to understand how organizations foster a greater sense of belonging with both internal teams and customers. Committed to supporting nonprofits with impact, Victoria serves on the Young Professionals Advisory Board for LAMusArt in Los Angeles, California.
After several years of conversations with Latinx students about their college and workplace concerns, Victoria began to notice a pattern in their challenges. Not only did she relate, but also realized that some of the lessons she had learned along her professional career were unique to a first-generation upbringing and not often shared.
And so, the framework for 'First-Gen, NextGen' was born.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2021First-Gen, Next-Gen is an absolute must-read for any young Latinx individual. Banuelos brilliantly captures and gives voice to the first-generation experience that so many share, and provides particular and unique insight into the Hispanic-American and Latinx aspect of the first-generation upbringing and culture in the United States.
Through her personal narratives and experiences, case studies, and conversations with Latinx professionals from a wide range of industries and careers, Banuelos provides a comprehensive and powerful guide for any young Latinx professional who is trying to figure out how to start their career and to learn how to navigate the American workplace and various professional spaces.
As a high school teacher of primarily Latinx students, First-Gen, Next-Gen is exactly the type of resource my students need but have been missing for so long. While containing invaluable professional advice and direction, the book is an incredibly enjoyable and relatable read, particularly for young Hispanic-Americans who will identify with Banuelos’ experience and upbringing. Banuelos’ communication style and lived experiences will resonate with all first-generation Latinx Americans (and likely all first-generation Americans as a whole), and provide readers with a familiar and comforting setting to begin the process of career exploration and development.
First-Gen, Next-Gen is also a critical read for any employers or allies who have a genuine commitment to making American workplaces more diverse and equitable. A phenomenal and extremely necessary book for America’s evolving workforce!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2021First-Gen, NextGen was an incredibly insightful read. It gives a thoughtful view into a world that is both familiar and yet incredibly different. While many of the experiences shared in the book are in reference to first-generation Latinx, I believe the topics to be highly relatable for many first-generation immigrants as well. I found this commonality to be especially intriguing and expect that the advice and stories shared in this book could benefit a broad audience. This book is well-articulated and very-well written. I would highly recommend it to others, especially those looking to expand their perspective!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2021I wish there was a book out there like First-Gen, NextGen when I was graduating college and starting my career. This is a wonderful book for Latinx to jump start their paths, but in all honesty any young professional could greatly benefit from reading Banuelo's insights. It's a must read for any young person battling the career jungle.
