Vermont's primary election day is coming up on Tuesday, Aug. 9, and this year there are several high-profile races to watch.We've compiled a list of some of the biggest names and races to help you as you head to the polls.Editor's note: The Progressive Party candidates are not listed because there is no Progressive Party primary. All Progressive candidates are running unopposed.U.S. SenateVermonters will have a big decision to make this year, as one of the state's U.S. Senate seats is up for grabs for the first time since 1974. Sen. Patrick Leahy's term is set to expire in 2023, 49 years after he was first elected to represent the Green Mountain State in Washington.Democratic candidates:Issac Evans-Frantz - Evans-Frantz is a political advocate and first-time candidate for political office.Niki Thran - Dr. Thran is an emergency physician in a community hospital in Randolph and an advocate for the medical community. She is a first-time candidate for office.Peter Welch - Welch is the current representative for Vermont's At-Large Congressional District and has served in the role since 2007. He is a former member of the Vermont State Senate.Republican candidates:Gerald Malloy - Malloy is a veteran and business executive. He is a political newcomer and a first-time candidate for political office.Myers Mermel - Mermel is an investment banker and business executive. He served as a White House aide for President George H.W. Bush and ran for Lt. Gov. in New York in 2010.Christina Nolan - Nolan is a former United States Attorney who also served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney during her career.U.S. House Vermont At-Large DistrictWith one of Vermont's U.S. Senate seats up for election this year, current House representative Peter Welch is running to take Patrick Leahy's place. That leaves several candidates to battle it out to take over Welch's position as the representative for Vermont's At-Large District in the U.S. House.Democratic candidates:Molly Gray - Gray is the current Lt. Governor of Vermont. She is a Burlington lawyer and has served as lieutenant governor since 2020.Becca Balint - Balint is a Vermont State Senator and educator. GovernorIncumbent Gov. Phil Scott will face off against several candidates for his party's nomination in the gubernatorial primary.Democratic candidates:Brenda Siegel - Siegel is a small business owner and political advocate who served as an intern for Sen. Bernie Sanders. Joe Benning - Benning is an attorney and has been a member of the Vermont State Senate, representing Caledonia District since 2011.Greg Thayer - Thayer is an accountant and a former Rutland alderman.Secretary of StateCurrent Secretary of State Jim Condos announced he will retire at the end of his current term, after spending the past 11 years overseeing local elections. The 71-year-old has spent the past 37 years in various elected positions and said he is looking forward to the next chapter in his life.Democratic candidates:Sarah Copeland Hanzas - Rep. Copeland Hanzas has been a member of the Vermont House of Representatives since 2005 and currently serves as co-chair of the Vermont Democratic Party Fundraising Committee.John Odum - Odum is a musician and cybersecurity expert who currently serves as Montpelier city clerk.Chris Winters - Winters currently serves as Deputy Secretary of State. He is an attorney and has worked in the Secretary of State's office since 1997.Republican candidates:H. Brooke Paige - Paige is a businessman who is running uncontested for his party's primary nomination. He is currently running for election to multiple offices, including Attorney General, State Auditor, and Treasurer. Ballotpedia clarifies that candidates in Vermont can run in the primaries for multiple offices. U.S. Senate

Democratic candidates:

Governor

Incumbent Gov. Phil Scott will face off against several candidates for his party's nomination in the gubernatorial primary.
