The Oscar nominees 2023 tell many stories, from the world-conquering blockbusters that saved theatrical moviegoing—Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water—to the personal, director-driven projects— Tár, Women Talking—that are the lifeblood of any Oscar lineup. But for the past few weeks of awards season, there’s seemingly been one film to rule them all. Leading the Oscar nominees with 11 total nominations, Everything Everywhere All at Once heads into Oscar night as the one to beat, with the potential to make some history in the process.
The A24 sci-fi adventure premiered at SXSW almost exactly a year ago, and in the same way the film slowly emerged as a word-of-mouth box office phenomenon, the EEAAO Oscar buzz built throughout the fall. By the time star Michelle Yeoh—seemingly neck and neck with Cate Blanchett in the best-actress race—was on hand at the Toronto International Film Festival to accept an honorary award, it was clear that the film from directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert was in it for the long haul. Though Yeoh’s Evelyn Wang is at the center of the film, it’s her costar Ke Huy Quan who has been raking in awards; other than a loss to The Banshees of Inisherin’s Barry Keoghan at the BAFTA awards, Quan is undefeated at major awards ceremonies this season, and his victory in best supporting actor is widely expected.
Everything Everywhere All at Once has helped make the best-supporting-actress race one of the most unpredictable, with Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu both nominated. They face competition from an industry veteran who, like Curtis, has never won an Oscar, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s Angela Bassett***.*** But then there are also actresses who, like Hsu, have had thrilling breakouts this season: Banshees of Inisherin’s Kerry Condon and The Whale’s Hong Chau.
Sixteen of this year’s acting nominees are first-timers, including everyone in the best-actor race, which most predictors believe has come down to two contenders: Elvis breakout star Austin Butler and The Whale’s Brendan Fraser, who rivals Quan for the year’s best comeback story. Elvis is nominated in seven other categories, including best picture, and will face off against The Whale for best makeup and hairstyling, a category that is traditionally awarded earlier in the night. Will the winner in that category predict who will triumph in best actor? There’s only one way to find out.
