Harry Styles is an outlier. Not only is the ‘Watermelon Sugar’ singer the only man to shore up on the cover of US Vogue in the magazine’s 128-year history, but his gender-neutral and eccentric nouveau glam-rock looks – whether it’s that Gucci feather boa that he wore to last year’s Grammy Awards, or the flamboyant pink feathered coat he wore to headline at Coachella this year – will always send social media into a frenzy.
The latest among them is the multicolour crochet knit top that the singer wore to dinner at the famous Rubirosa Italian restaurant in SoHo with Olivia Wilde, which he paired with brown pinstripe trousers and a pair of clean white trainers, and is just one of the charming granny-knitted garments that the megawatt singer owns.
Fans will remember that JW Anderson cardigan he wore on the Today show which was so popular it got its own hashtag on TikTok (and started a wild DIY trend with his craftsy fans). Then there was the crochet orange tank top he wore in ‘Watermelon Sugar’ which launched a thousand imitations on online e-tailer, Etsy. Not to mention all of the Princess Diana-inspired pieces he rolled out while on tour for his Fine Line album, which he released in 2019.
Ever since working with super stylist Harry Lambert, Harry Styles has had first dibs on fashion’s most out-there and on-trend pieces. With crochet and kitschy knits everywhere at the SS23 shows (homespun cardigans at Loewe; dowager-esque Argyle print cardigans at Versace) his knit obsession doesn't look set to snag anytime soon.
