The Story

Hunter Biden reached a plea deal with the Justice Department.

Over what?

Evading taxes and gun charges. The DOJ charged President Biden’s son, Hunter, with two misdemeanor counts of tax evasion. It comes after he allegedly didn’t pay more than a combined $200,000 in taxes in 2017 and 2018. Prosecutors also charged the 53-year-old with illegal possession of a firearm while being a drug user — a charge that can lead to up to 10 years in prison. Now, Hunter’s avoided a trial by entering a plea deal and will likely avoid prison altogether.

What's next?

It’s up to a judge to decide whether to approve the deal, which could include a two-year probationary period. In the meantime, Republicans said the DOJ's treatment of Hunter shows a double standard compared to former President Trump’s indictment. In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the DOJ corrupt and said it gave Hunter “a mere traffic ticket.” Meanwhile, some legal experts maintain that the charges are rare. The White House said, “the president and first lady love their son and support him as he continues to rebuild his life.”

The charges against Hunter follow a number of scandals, including over his allegedly abandoned laptop and child support. Now, as a plea deal hangs in the balance, many are wondering if he got off a little too easy.

What health experts are calling for…

Anxiety screenings. Yesterday, a group of health experts said Americans ages 19 to 64 should get screened for anxiety — even if they don't have any symptoms. The task force said pregnant women and new moms should also be examined. About 19% of adults in the US have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder in the past year. Now, for the first time, the group of health experts have issued a final recommendation on anxiety screenings for adults. The task force plays a key role in influencing what preventive services insurance should cover, but doctors don't have to follow the recommendations.

Who was indicted…

Andrew Tate. Yesterday, Romanian prosecutors charged the influencer and his brother, Tristan, with rape and human trafficking. Tate gained popularity as a former kickboxer and online personality who's posted misogynistic content. Now, authorities say that Tate sexually exploited seven women and formed an organized crime ring in 2021. Tate was arrested last December and has been under house arrest in Romania since March. A trial date is expected to be set today.

What's got everyone waiting for updates...

The submersible. Officials are still looking for the vessel carrying five people on an expedition to the Titanic wreckage. Early this morning, the US Coast Guard said a Canadian aircraft detected “underwater noises in the search area.” It's raising hope that the passengers could be rescued before they run out of oxygen. Meanwhile, everyone’s googling this video game controller.

What’s leaving a trail of worry…

A giant African snail. Yesterday, state officials placed portions of Broward County, FL, under quarantine as they try to kill off the invasive creature with a pesticide. The snail contains a parasite that could be harmful to plants and could even lead to meningitis in people who come in contact with the snail. Slimy situation.
