One of Skimm's Books We Couldn't Put Down This Year

Four friends. Fifteen years. Who We Are Now is a story of Sliding Doors moments, those seemingly small choices of early adulthood that determine the course of our lives.

It is 2006 and Rachel, Clarissa, Dev, and Nate are best friends, seniors on the eve of their college graduation. Their whole lives are before them, at once full of promise and anxiety. Bound to one another as they are, they imagine their closeness will last forever—but things change as they take their first steps away from one another and into adulthood.

Each year is told from one character’s point of view, and in that way, we stride swiftly through their lives. These four friends feel their twenties and thirties flying by, and suddenly small moments fast become regrets or unexpected boons, decisions they’ll spend years wishing they could undo and choices that come to define them. As the foursome endure professional setbacks, deep loss, and creative success, fortunes shift and friendships strain—and it will take a tragic turn of events to bring them together again.

Who We Are Now is a poignant story of epic friendship that jumps boldly through the years, moving at the same unforgiving pace as does that precious, confusing time between college and real life. This novel is perfect for readers who adore tales of friendship, explorations of the second coming of age moment that arrives in our thirties, and fans of Meg Wolitzer’s The Interestings or Dolly Alderton’s Ghosts.

Review

Praise for Who We Are Now
"An unforgettable novel, populated with recognizable characters, packed with nuanced emotion, and replete with the intimately tender, relatable style that has fast become Lauryn Chamberlain’s trademark. Every lifelong friendship is its own epic tale, and Chamberlain gives these stories their due with a level of care I found incredibly moving, all while expertly weaving a diverting narrative I couldn’t put down!"
—Marissa Stapley, New York Times bestselling author of Lucky

Who We Are Now transported me back to my college years and twenties in New York: I could hear the thumping club music, see the rows of cubicles, and feel each character's yearning for the day everything falls into place. Chamberlain beautifully captures the intimacy of friendship and the ache of nostalgia. Propulsive, poignant, and stylish, this is a must-read.”–Hannah Orenstein, author of Playing With Matches and Meant to be Mine

“Chamberlain masterfully portrays the complexities of friendships as they grow and change over time…Engaging and beautifully written, this story provides a poignant and insightful tale of friendship, love, and resilience. It is a must-read for anyone seeking an immersive and compelling story of young adulthood.”
Booklist

"A brilliantly paced coming-of-age novel,
Who We Are Now stars four memorable characters who each remind me of someone I know and love. Chamberlain beautifully captures how our relationships, dreams, and priorities shift over time, and is unflinchingly candid when describing the sticky mixture of envy and pride we feel when our friends succeed before us. This book is brimming with heart and wisdom; I'll admit I wept several times during the last few chapters, so don't say I didn't warn you!"—Caitlin Barasch, author of A Novel Obsession

Who We Are Now is an honest, insightful look at the ways in which friendships, first formed in college, continue to expand and contract through the years. Chamberlain aptly demonstrates that who we are now is, in fact, a composite of our past histories and our future desires. A relatable and engaging read.”—Karen Winn, author of Our Little World

"Who We Are Now
is the compulsively readable coming-of-age tale following four friends in the early aughts of New York throughout their most formative decades. Chamberlain masterfully invokes the wistful nostalgia of that tender time post-grad, on the precipice of real life, when we’re brimming with the promise of the future, yet swathed in self-doubt. Chamberlain’s sophomore novel is a brilliant meditation on modern friendship and sophisticatedly captures how the micro decisions we makeon the brink of adulthood can have macro consequences on who we ultimately become."—Louise Claire Johnson, author of Behind the Red Door

End of college, it’s graduation ,Four friends are embarking on a journey unlike anything they have known till now. Each taking their own path…. Nate finds himself in the Wall Street world, Rachel in the publishing world where she wanted to be, Clarissa tending to bars while trying to come up with comedy gigs, while Dev is…. lost on what his next step in life should be while he crashes with Nate at his apartment.Like all close friends who have shared each others space day and night for four years in college, they promise to remain best of friends forever and hope to succeed in life. But that doesn’t always happen, does it?This is really heart felt coming of age story of four college friends trying to find their footing in life, trying to achieve what they think is success in their field of interest and even with the best of intentions, things happen that keep some close while others drift away with passage of time. Most millennials will be able to relate to this book. It gives a real glimpse into the emotions, uncertainty , jealousy that comes with going out into the real world and trying to figure things out. It also has some heavy topics like addiction, sexual abuse, LGBTQ which are written beautifully.May be a little slow for some but I really cherished all the characters and the character development felt very apt, with their advancing age.

I adored this book. The premise is simple: four friends, fifteen years. But we all know friendship is anything but simple. It's messy and complicated, and dramatic too, which is exactly what you're getting here with Dev, Clarissa, Rachel, and Nate.

I think when we hear the word "epic" we often think of battles and war and death, but I would argue that stories like this--subtle but sweeping, filled with moments of happiness and sadness and jealousy, anger and disappointment, constantly ebbing and flowing like an unpredictable but vital river--are just as epic.

Anyway, that was a lot of big words for a review that could have just been “this book is incredible you have to read it”

I loved the premise - Four young adults are best friends in college in we get to follow their journey through life. But none of the characters was very likable and the story moves very slow. Nothing really happened. Very disappointing. Great setting - set in New York City. I just felt this had a lot of potential, but came up short.

I feel as if that's the perfect description of this book. Sometimes we cling to things that automatically change through time, distance, experiences, people, jobs, places, etc. The evolution of these 4 college buddies was fascinating. I wanted to stir each of them in other directions to avoid pitfalls and cheered when they cherished their past while forging their future. It was a reminder of how different and yet the same we are as humans and how no one escapes challenges/struggles in their lives. It also shows us how we get stuck wanting to be like someone else instead of actualizing our own potential. Also, that even for longtime friends, you can't make someone be something they're not. When it ended, I wanted to know where and "then there were 3" were headed which could be Book 3 for Lauryn.

Graduation is a time of change. Graduation from high school is generally filled with optimism, as people rush off to spend their first years away from home. They form those revered stereotypical relationships in sororities and fraternities, finally finding the people that are “in your tribe”. People learn how to take care of themselves - fix meals, clean, do laundry, and party. For Rachel, Nate, Dev and Clarissa, Northwestern University brought them all together.

This novel, the sophomore effort from Lauryn Chamberlain, spans the fifteen year period in which the protagonists find success and failure. One even finds the end if their life.

Starting a novel off at a funeral isn’t always a good choice. Even though the deceased isn’t identified, I found it was pretty obvious from the jump. That gave me part of the who, but I didn’t know the why. I will give her kudos for the answer to that latter question not being obvious.

As someone way past my thirties, I can view this through a lens of nostalgia. I did go to university, but did not reside there, To be clear, this isn’t a novel where Someone Must Overcome Something. It’s simply a telling of what happens to four people who thought they’d be friends forever, and then discover that may not be the case.

It also shows that surrounding make a difference, None of these people really have to worry about money. It is more a novel about the upper and middle classes. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, it actually does make for a much easier read. Unfortunately, I wasn’t as close to the characters as I wanted. Each chapter focuses on a different person, but the use of third person can alienate the reader. I think I would have preferred that, but then again, that’s also almost the norm now, There were also very few plot twists.

There is an irony in making the traditional new again. This was an entertaining, quick read. It may not have resonated with me permanently, but there’s nothing wrong with that. Sometimes you just want to read about everyday people trying to figure it all out. And there is also solace is knowing that we all find our way and our own form of success however that is defined, That definition should also be a very personal one.

Also - the release date of August for this novel is perfect, as back-to-school is happening right now.

WHO WE ARE NOW by Lauryn Chamberlain is the story of four college friends, housemates who know one another inside and out from their years at Northwestern University. In the years following graduation, the four break apart, come together, flourish and flounder in the roller coaster ride that was the early part of the twenty-first century. While I was intrigued by the premise, I did not connect with any of the four characters, finding them more caricatures and stereotypes than living and breathing people I could relate to. The settings were vague for me as well. What made this particularly galling is that I was virtually that cohort of young hopefuls in the city. So, the premise is intriguing, the execution does not deliver what I'd hoped to read. I received a copy of this book and these opinions are my own, unbiased thoughts.
