Austen's most popular novel, the unforgettable story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy

Few have failed to be charmed by the witty and independent spirit of Elizabeth Bennet in Austen’s beloved classic
Pride and Prejudice. When Elizabeth Bennet first meets eligible bachelor Fitzwilliam Darcy, she thinks him arrogant and conceited; he is indifferent to her good looks and lively mind. When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. In the sparkling comedy of manners that follows, Jane Austen shows us the folly of judging by first impressions and superbly evokes the friendships, gossip and snobberies of provincial middle-class life. This Penguin Classics edition, based on Austen's first edition, contains the original Penguin Classics introduction by Tony Tanner and an updated introduction and notes by Viven Jones.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

“The wit of Jane Austen has for partner the perfection of her taste.” —Virginia Woolf

“Nobody has ever been slyer with characters than Austen.”
—Marlon James, “My 10 Favorite Books,” in T: The New York Times Style Magazine

About the Author

Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 at Steventon near Basingstoke, the seventh child of the rector of the parish. She lived with her family at Steventon until they moved to Bath when her father retired in 1801. After his death in 1805, she moved around with her mother; in 1809, they settled in Chawton, near Alton, Hampshire. Here she remained, except for a few visits to London, until in May 1817 she moved to Winchester to be near her doctor. There she died on July 18, 1817. As a girl Jane Austen wrote stories, including burlesques of popular romances. Her works were only published after much revision, four novels being published in her lifetime. These are Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma(1816). Two other novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published posthumously in 1818 with a biographical notice by her brother, Henry Austen, the first formal announcement of her authorship. Persuasion was written in a race against failing health in 1815-16. She also left two earlier compositions, a short epistolary novel, Lady Susan, and an unfinished novel, The Watsons. At the time of her death, she was working on a new novel, Sanditon, a fragmentary draft of which survives.

Vivien Jones is a senior lecturer in English at the University of Leeds.

Tony Tanner was a Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge and a professor of English and American literature at the University of Cambridge. He died in December 1998.

Pretty good
It came in pretty good condition, still some flaws on the covers but doesn’t really bother me for the price. I prefer thicker pages as I was hoping to highlight in this book but the pages are really thin

What can one say in the negative about such a respected novel without appearing to be a provocative fool? I know not, so I will limit my brief comment to focusing on the magnificent prose, and memorable characters that Jane Austen brings wonderfully to life in this pleasant and enjoyable novel. If you are looking for some wholesome escapism in a world created by a master of the English language, one could do no better that entering the world of Austen's vivid and memorable Pride and Prejudice.

This book completely held my attention from start to finish. It was a pleasure to see into the society and world of the past. The manners and customs are so changed in the world of today!

At times the style of writing was so different that I had to reread a paragraph a couple of times to understand the meaning. I also looked up a lot of words that are no longer in common use. I found that a pleasant challenge.

It is clear to see why this book has remained such a classic for these many years!

5.0 out of 5 stars Go for this edition
Reviewed in Canada on November 21, 2023
Pride and Prejudice is, of course, available in many, many editions. But if you want one with annotations that help clarify the text and with annoying errors from the original text silently corrected (but only where the errors are obvious), this is the one to go for. The Oxford World's Classics edition is another option, but I find the annotations poorly organized and their markers within the text poorly indicated (just asterisks, no numbers). This is true of many OWC editions. Some titles, notably those by Charles Dickens, do not even have the annotations indicated within the text, so you don't know that a particular passage has an accompanying annotation. Between Penguin and OWC, always go for Penguin.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book to read again and again.

A book to read again and again. In some ways as almost a farce, the visiting of houses, the letters, the comings and goings of carriages, the pretensions of class. All wonderfully told. Not as bleak as a Brontë novel, the dark corners are not inhabited by thoroughly reprehensible characters (Wickham, Collins etc) a much lighter read. I wonder if Doris Day copied Austen for the plots of her films?
