In everyone’s life, there comes a moment when you realize you’ve been lied to: For there to be beauty, there doesn’t necessarily have to be pain. That’s when you come around to Crocs.
My moment of Croc clarity happened in a church. At Simone Rocha’s Fall 2024 show, a model walked through the pews at London’s St. Bartholomew the Great in a freaky sheer dress with patches of brown fur at the shoulders and hips, styled with pearl-embellished Crocs. Another wore a gray hoodie layered under a sheer corset with a matching skirt with shimmering floral adornments and matching white platform bedazzled Crocs. I’d never thought of Crocs as particularly divine, but Rocha made them feel angelic.
Today, the Simone Rocha x Crocs collection is finally available to shop. In Rocha’s world, three Croc silhouettes—the Siren Clog, Classic Clog, and Quick Trail—are frosted with her signature pearls, crystals, and jet beading. On social media, they’ve caused a frenzy and are anticipated to sell out nearly instantly. And while there have been high-fashion Crocs before (Christopher Kane’s marbled clogs with Jibbitzes meant to look like minerals, Balenciaga’s controversial platform Croc), none has been received with quite the same unanimous delight as Rocha’s.
On Instagram, Rocha posted a photo of a pair of baby-pink Quick Trails, prompting one commenter to respond: “Mother of God.” Under a photo of the black platform heels, another wrote, “I don’t even like Crocs but THESE! 🔥.” By the time Rocha had uploaded a photo of the simple black clog slide with pearls jetting out the toes, multiple fans were demanding to know “WHAT TIME” the launch was. Another wrote, “If only, if only, if only.”
One photo from the collection campaign has been stuck in my mind for days: a model in a tiered sheer dress, with ruched fabric made to look like the piping of wedding cake frosting, her face covered by a pearl beaded headpiece, and her toes peeking out from a clear pair of Simone Rocha Croc clogs pierced with large bauble pearls and beads.
It’s beautiful in a way that could be intimidating, and yet it somehow isn’t. The slip-on Croc clogs give the bridal look a feeling of comfort; they bring Rocha’s otherworldly universe closer to our earthly reality, where we need for shoes that won’t make our toes bleed or blister. Yet it still feels like a dream. And what could be more heavenly than that?
