There is perhaps no garment that gets greater use from the women of royal families than the coatdress. A longtime staple in the wardrobes of figures like Princess Kate (who, by the way, rewore one of her favorite Catherine Walker coatdresses just yesterday), the coatdress provides a polished and refined touch to any outfit. In that sense, it’s easy to see why even Hailey Bieber would try her hand at the look.

Last night, the Rhode founder proved that she’s the Princess of Paris Fashion Week by subverting the Princess of Wales’s favorite uniform. Bieber emerged from her hotel wearing a textured and quilted version of a double-breasted coatdress made out of luscious velvet with a gleaming, pearlescent glow.

While the dress was oversized in some areas, from the rounded shoulders to the hefty sleeves, it ultimately played with proportions with its daringly short hemline, which barely brushed the top of Bieber’s thighs. Suffice to say, it’s a type of coatdress that we aren’t likely to see Kate wear any time soon.

Bieber continued the mother of pearl theme with an array of more lustrous accessories, including an iridescent bedazzled handbag, large pearl stud earrings, and velvet ballet flats.

Bieber’s embrace of the coatdress isn’t so surprising, considering her affinity for other forms of businesswear. The beauty maven often relies on blazers and suits in her day-to-day street style, whether that means styling a lapelless blazer as a micro minidress or layering a colossally oversized blazer atop a cropped T-shirt.
